COSTA DEL SOL

The name translates to Sun Coast and it is the most southern region of mainland Europe. Its climate and beaches have attracted millions of foreigners to visit and in many cases set up home here.
Multi-storey apartment complexes, mega hotels and expensive resorts have overtaken the tiny quaint fishing villages that once lined this Mediterranean coastline. Despite this invasion, it is still possible to find gentle spots where the tranquil life of yesteryear lingers on.
The coast stretches all the way from Nerja in the east to
La Linea in the west.
There are records to prove that were settlements here in the Bronze Age and the region has been conquered and ruled by the Phoenicians, Romans the Vandals and the Moors. And they have all left their mark with a kaleidoscope of bui
ldings, art and culture.
There is a wide variety of life styles.
Malaga, the provincial capital remains very sedate and charming in parts of the old city. The once sleepy fishing village of Torremolinos is home to incredible hordes with its English fish and chip shops outnumbering the Spanish bodegas and tapas bars. Marbella and Puerto Banus are home to many of the world’s rich and famous. And there are still towns and villages trying to get into the 21st century.

WHAT TO SEE

Most of those coming to the Costal del Sol arrive at Malaga Airport, which is currently undergoing a multi-million euro upgrade. As a result, the area is a mighty mess but hopefully things can only get better.
The airport is almost the center point of the Costa del Sol. Turn right when you exit and drive for one hour and you’ll be at Gibraltar, the western extremity of the coast. Turn left and in our hour, you will be in Nerja, the eastern and quieter extremity. Head inland at any point and you will find the villages that are the final bastions of true Spanish life. Slowly they too are being developed as Northern Europeans build homes away from the more expensive coastal areas.

WHERE TO STAY

There is a complete range of accommodation available. nexpensive camping sites with basic needs are scattered along the coast and inland. Lavish luxury resorts are available attached to beaches or nestled in the countryside. Probably the most popular place to stay is in a rental villa or apartment.
